Conservation Specialist

(Full-time)

The Peanut Soil and Water Conservation District (PSWCD) with an office located in Smithfield Virginia, comprises Isle of Wight and Surry County, and the City of Suffolk. Under the direction of the Peanut SWCD Board of Directors, District Staff perform a broad range of technical, outreach, and administrative duties pertaining to implementation of District activities, services and programs. Our office environment is flexible, collaborative and supportive. Our small staff is forward-thinking, innovative, motivated and dedicated.  Our staff is focused on customer service to the agricultural producers and communities we serve.

 

The Peanut Soil and Water Conservation District is accepting applications for the position of Conservation Specialist. This full-time position provides technical assistance to the District in implementing the Virginia Agricultural Best Management Practice cost-share program.

 

The selected candidate will have a high school diploma with agricultural experience being favorable.   An advanced degree in an agricultural or a natural resource related field preferred.  Successful work experience advantageous.  Supplementary experience in farming, agriculture or natural resources is valuable. Computer skills, mechanical aptitude and manual labor experience is preferred. Applicant must possess a valid Virginia driver’s license. The ability to work courteously with the public is required. Applicant should be comfortable working outdoors with farmers, producers, contractors, and comfortable around livestock. Applicant will be expected to earn conservation, nutrient management, and engineering certifications.

 

Salary and benefits will be based upon qualifications and experience.  Current DCR or NRCS conservation planning and engineering certifications very valuable.
